This jam-packed tour includes something for everyone. Our journey begins in lively Avignon in the heart of Provence, which has preserved the stunning Popes' Palace within its 14th century ramparts. Then southward for some horseback riding in the Camargue, a 328 square-mile nature park renowned for its varied fauna and marshlands. Participants will visit Nîmes with the best-preserved Roman remains outside of Italy (the arena which still hosts today "corrida" or bullfighting events, the Maison Carrée-1st-century BC temple and the spectacular aqueduct, le Pont du Gard). After a busy day of sightseeing, a swim at the foot of the aqueduct will be appreciated. Art lovers will enjoy Aix en Provence and the stroll around the Sainte-Victoire mountain, immortalized in painting by Cézanne. Off to the Riviera's fashionable towns: Cannes, home of the international film festival; Nice with its bustling old town and Italian atmosphere; and Monaco, sovereign state and playground of the wealthy. The tour concludes with a kayak excursion in the sparkling Mediterranean. |
